Context, Exegesis, and the Latter-day Saint Hope of a Renewed Earth
Reader’s Note
Originally drafted as a published response several years ago and substantially researched, expanded, and revised for Faith & Reason on September 30, 2026. The original notes behind this article responded to a 2010 Life After Ministry post titled Reasons Starting with Z. Because that early response was published as a quick response, the present article is offered as a new and substantially developed examination rather than as a backdated post. Primary-source links have been added throughout, earlier arguments have been strengthened or qualified where necessary, and the biblical and Restoration texts have been examined in greater historical and exegetical context.
The purpose is not merely to defend a quotation from President Gordon B. Hinckley. The larger question concerns how responsible Christians interpret historical statements, prophetic scripture, theological terminology, and competing eschatological claims. Readers are therefore encouraged to examine the linked primary sources and consider the complete contexts for themselves.
